Summary of Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff
Fates and Furies is a book about marriage, secrets, and the complexities of human relationships.
Told in two parts, the novel focuses on the marriage of Lotto and Mathilde Satterwhite. Initially, we experience the marriage from Lotto’s perspective (Fates). His view of the marriage is idealized and very romantic view.
From Lotto’s point of view, they are madly in love, a glamorous couple, and the envy of everyone around them. He sees their relationship as self sacrificing, generous, and forgiving of one another.
In the first part of the book, we follow Lotto as he transitions from being a struggling actor to a successful playwright. As a struggling actor he was still very much liked and many people questioned why his career had not kicked off. One night Lotto gets drunk and writes a play becomes successful and kick off his playwriting career.
We also follow Lotto as he meets Mathilde and they get married.
In the second part (Furies), we view the married from Mathilde’s point of view. Hidden truths are uncovered, upending Lotto’s narrative and exposing the complexities of their bond.
