Currently showing on Netflix is the movie Rebel Ridge. The movie is directed by Jeremy Saulnier.
The movie centers around how a former marine grapples his way to deal with small town corruption.
The story begins when lead character Terry Richmond, played by Aaron Pierre, arrives in the small town.
His reason for being there was to post bail for his cousin. It escalates into a violent stand off with the police chief and his entire department.
I was excited to watch this movie after seeing the trailer.
Aaron Pierre plays the lead character, Terry Richmond.
He does a fantastic job in making the character believable and prevents the storyline from being cheesy. Terry’s personality throughout the movie was cool and collected.
The movie itself was intriguing, I found myself routing for the character the entire time. The actions scenes were spectacular and all the close-up shots were executed perfectly.
Understanding the motivation for why Terry Richmond is walking the part he is in the movie creates a clearer picture.
There were moments where the movie slowed down and had some drawn-out scenes. The majority of the movie kept your attention as the plot built up.
The movie highlighted how authorities can sometimes manipulate legal loopholes. In this case, the police were using civil asset forfeiture.
Civil asset forfeiture allows law enforcement agencies to seize property they suspect is connected to criminal activity, even if the owner is not charged with a crime.
In Terry’s case they seized money that was on his possession during a very questionable stop.
What I liked about the movie
I loved all the action scenes in Rebel Ridge. I liked that there was no forced romance. There were multiple opportunities to lean in that direction, but I appreciated that the storyline did not go there.
I thought it was clever to leave the ending open-ended. It allows the viewer to speculate as to how or if everyone involved in the corruption would face consequences. It wasn’t a cheesy feel happy ending movie.
Would I recommend the movie?
Absolutely, this is a great movie to watch and unwind. If the storyline does not appeal to you the action in the movie definitely will!
Ratings for the movie
