Recently listened to Miranda Lambert’s new album, PostCards from Texas. Two of my favorite songs on the album are ‘Dammit Randy‘ and ‘Santa Fe‘.
Dammit Randy takes you on a journey about an ex wanting her back now that she is no longer invested in the relationship. Since this a feeling or situation that resonates with many people, your attention is instantly captured. I found myself zeroed in on the lyrics of the song.
“NOW THAT I’M GONE, I’VE GOT YOUR ATTENTION”
Nowhere in the song does Miranda confirm whether Randy is an ex boyfriend, ex husband or ex business partner. You just know that this is about an ex and are left to speculate on who Randy is.
“I’M REARVIEW ROLLING OFF THE MAP FROM TENNESSEE. WELL LIGHTNIN’ IN THE BOTTLE, AIN’T WHAT IT USED TO BE.”
The video opens to Miranda standing in front of what looks like a getaway cabin. She looks into the distance but in a calm and very relaxed manner. The lyrics to the song highlights the fact that ‘Randy’ did not appreciate what he had even though what he had could have been picture perfect.
“YOU WERE STANDIN’ BONE DRY IN THE MIDDLE OF A WATERFALL. YOU WERE LIVIN’ IN THE DARK BUT YOU COULDN’T SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY.”
The song concludes that since Randy was oblivious throughout the relationship and now she is over what was, and she is not looking back.
“YEAH NOW THAT I’VE MADE IT TO THE OTHERSIDE. I HOPE YOU’RE COUNTING SINGLES IN YOUR DOUBLE WIDE.”
One thing that is crystal clear is that this song is not just another heartbreak song. The resounding message throughout is bouncing back, finding your independence and not looking back.
“A MAN MIGHT CALL IT A WOMAN ON A MISSION, NOW THAT I’M GONE, I GOT YOUR ATTENTION.”
I listened to the rest of the album, Postcards from Texas, and enjoyed listening to the songs ‘Armadillo’ and ‘Santa Fe‘, which features Parker McCollum.
