Summary of Bug Hollow by Michelle Huneven
Bug Hollow follows the story of the Samuelson family. At the start of the book Sally Samuelson is only eight years old. Her older brother, Ellis, has just graduated from High School and is looking forward to starting college. But before college starts, Ellis leaves the family home. At first the family were worried and even went as far as putting out a missing-person poster but Ellis eventually sent postcards and called letting them know he was OK.
“I saw your ad in the paper. Please don’t do that again. It embarrassed me. I’m eighteen now and can live where I want.”— Ellis
Turns out Ellis moved to a place called Bug Hollow, a commune in Northern California. While living there, Ellis got a job at an ice cream shop and began dating a girl named Julia. Back home, his mother Sib was completely frantic and worried that he may not move forward with college. His father Phil, on the other hand, felt he was just exploring and would be back on track when needed.
“Every time the phone rang, everyone froze, then Sally’s parents raced to the extensions, with Hinky leaping and barking.”— Narrator
Eventually, the Samuelson’s drove out there and convinced Ellis to return back home with assurances that he can continue to call Julia and that she can attend Thanksgiving.

For school, Ellis chose Mississippi. He spent only six days with his family before he travelled to Mississippi. He set out a few weeks before school was set to start. One day, he went swimming with some friends at an old granite quarry but got stuck by trees that had been illegally dumped there and tragically died.
A few months later, his pregnant girlfriend, Julia, discovers she is pregnant. The rest of the story follows what becomes of the lives of the Samuelsons. Over decades and across continents, each family member copes in their own way: Sib, a schoolteacher, numbs herself through work and alcohol; Phil finds solace abroad; Katie pursues medicine, while Sally becomes a mother figure to baby Eva.
Main Plot & Characters
- Ellis Samuelson: He is the “golden boy” of the Samuelson clan. He was a straight-A-student and very good with baseball. He just graduated high school but sadly died at 18 years old. Katie nicknamed him El Greck.
- Julia: Ellis’s girlfriend from Bug Hollow. Arrives at the Samuelsons’ doorstep pregnant, becoming central to the family’s evolving dynamic.
“It’s like the last bit of El hanging on for dear life. I’d feel so guilty. Like I’d finished him off once and for all”— Julia
- Sibyl (“Sib”) Samuelson: She is the mother of Ellis, Katie and Sally. Sib is a fourth‑grade teacher. Sib is a great teacher but not so much a great parent.
- Phil Samuelson: He is married to Sib and is the father to Ellis, Katie and Julia. Phil is an engineer and works as a project manager for Parsons Engineering. He was always traveling to foreign countries including Saudi Arabia.
- Katie Samuelson: The high-achieving middle child. She returns home briefly after her mother is diagnosed with breast cancer. She and Sib always had a somewhat difficult relationship.
“God, Katie, roll down your window. You stink. Why don’t you use deodorant?”— Sib to Katie
- Sally Samuelson: The youngest at age eight during Ellis’s disappearance. Grows into a nurturing figure, becoming the primary caregiver to Eva, Ellis and Julia’s daughter. Ellis nicknamed her “little squeaks” or “pipsqueak” with variations.
- Eva: She is Ellis and Julia’s daughter. Ellis never got to know her.
- Yvette: She was married to an older man named Claude. She and Claude travelled around the world to many countries including Saudi Arabia where they met Phil.
- Hinky: The Samuelson’s dog. He is a Manchester terrier.
Writing Style
Huneven tells the story using a third-person narration style with a focus on different characters. Central to many of the character’s in the story is the life of Ellis. We listen to many of their points of views including that of Julia, Yvette’s, and Sib’s.
The author tells the story in ten chapters and even though it is not a very big book, it is well written and straight to the point, which we appreciated.
Final Thoughts on Bug Hollow by Michelle Huneven
Bug Hollow is a book that chronicles grief, healing, and the beauty of family even amongst some of the messy events that life sometimes deals. Through the Samuelson family’s journey, Michelle Huneven captures how love and loss can shape lives in unexpected ways. Despite the sorrow at its core, the novel also shows moments of warmth, humor, and quiet strength. It’s a reminder that even in the face of tragedy, families can endure, adapt, and find connection again, even if it’s not in the ways they first imagined.
