Summary of The Night Circus

The Night Circus begins with two individuals who have the ability to manipulate energy (magic if you will). One of them becomes a famous magician, known as Prospero the Enchanter. Unlike other magicians who try to pass off their illusions as real, Prospero does the opposite. He works to pass off his real life manipulations in a way that people believe they are just very well executed magic tricks.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern Book

The second individual, known as Mr. A.H. or Alexander, was once a mentor to Prospero. But many years ago, they had a difference of opinion about the way of the world. Prospero felt Mr. A.H.’s methods were outdated and came up with methods of his own that he felt were much more superior. Mr. A.H. told Prospero that the only way to prove his methodologies were worthwhile was for them to be teachable and so Prospero began teaching. The two of them began pitting their respective students against each other. Over time, they ran challenges to see which technique was the strongest.

When Prospero discovers he has a six-year old daughter, named Celia, and that his daughter possesses some unique abilities, he invited Mr. A.H. to view her skills and a new challenge begins. Mr. A.H. on his end, adopts a young man (Marco), to be his student and he and Prospero bind Celia and Marco into a lifelong challenge.

As the competition begins, the Night Circus becomes their battleground, filled with enchanting performances and magical creations. Along the way, Celia and Marco fall in love, complicating their rivalry. Their romance soon threatens not only their lives but also the fate of the circus itself.

“The circus arrives without warning.”— Narrator

Writing Style

The story is told using a narration style but from multiple perspectives. We hear from so many of the character’s point of views including Celia, Marco, Bailey, Tara, Isobel, Widget and Poppet.

Morgenstern’s writing is so detailed that as a reader you really feel his words come to life. The way he describes Chandresh’s no-menu midnight dinners, the deserts, taste, the birds and animals in the circus, and Marco and Celia’s magic are just simply amazing. Speaking of Marco and Celia, their romance even though we only get brief moments are electrifying.

The characters in this book are very likeable even though many of them are eccentric, it really works for this story. We loved the way the book is structured because just like Celia and Marco, you spend a good deal of time trying to figure out what the challenge is, when it will start, how it will be resolved and if there is a way out!

We originally thought the book was going to be about a circus that takes place at night and to be honest, that did not sound like an exciting read. But we are so glad we picked up the book as it turned out to be so much more, a real treat to read. Yes, there is a circus involved but when you mix in the fact that people possess magical abilities and they pretend to pass them off as illusions and throw in the challenge, you get something fantastic.
