The First Time I Saw Him by Laura Dave
In The First Time I Saw Him, Laura Dave continues Hannah Hall’s journey in this sequel to the book The Last Thing He Told Me.
Five years after Owen vanished without a trace, Hannah Hall has rebuilt her life in Southern California alongside her stepdaughter, Bailey. The two have found a steady rhythm, strengthened their bond, and even formed a connection with Bailey’s grandfather, Nicholas. Slowly, it feels like the chaos of the past is finally behind them.
But everything changes when Owen suddenly reappears in Hannah’s life. His return isn’t a reunion, rather it’s a warning. Hannah immediately knows that the danger they escaped is back, and this time, it’s closing in fast.
With no time to waste, Hannah and Bailey are forced to run again. As the threat grows and new secrets are discovered, Hannah will do anything to protect Bailey, even if it means risking her own life. In the middle of the fear and uncertainty, Hannah begins to realize that a life with Owen may not be lost to her forever, and there could still be a path back to the second chance she thought was gone.

“Laura Dave does an excellent job building suspense throughout this story. We enjoyed her previous book, The Last Thing He Told Me, and we were curious to see if this book would be able to hold its own. We found it to be even better than the first book.
By book two, we were already invested in the characters, so it was especially satisfying to see how Hannah and Bailey have grown since Owen’s disappearance and how much closer they have become. We loved the twists in the book because we didn’t see some of them coming. We really liked getting a background into Nicholas history and his association with the crime syndicate.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it.”
