The Astral Library by Kate Quinn

Alexandria “Alix” Watson has learned one lesson from her barren childhood in the foster-care system: unlike people, books will never let you down. Working three dead-end jobs to make ends meet and knowing college is a pipe dream, Alix takes nightly refuge in the high-vaulted reading room at the Boston Public Library, escaping into her favorite fantasy novels and dreaming of far-off lands. Until the day she stumbles through a hidden door and meets the Librarian: the ageless, acerbic guardian of a hidden library where the desperate and the lost escape to new lives…inside their favorite books.

The Librarian takes a dazzled Alix under her wing, but before she can escape into the pages of her new life, a shadowy enemy emerges to threaten everyone the Astral Library has ever helped protect. Aided by a dashing costume-shop owner, Alix and the Librarian flee through the Regency drawing rooms of Jane Austen to the back alleys of Sherlock Holmes and the champagne-soaked parties of The Great Gatsby as danger draws inexorably closer. But who does their enemy really wish to destroy—Alix, the Librarian, or the Library itself?

Our Rating of This Book

“We enjoyed reading this book and also listening to the audiobook version. As a former Bostonian, it was great to see the Boston Public Library receive some recognition. Love that library! We also liked how the book makes you, as a reader, think about the idea of escapism and what it would be like if you could actually live inside a book. We enjoy many different kinds of stories, including books with dragons and full-out wars, but we certainly would not want to live inside most of them. The jury is still still out on which book we would choose to live in.

The story includes many famous literary characters and references, including Pride and Prejudice, The Three Musketeers, Sherlock Holmes, The Great Gatsby, Jane Eyre, and Sense and Sensibility. We will say that while reading the book we were concerned if there may be some potential copyright issues here but that’s a story for another day.

In many ways, the story reminded us of The Midnight Library, except that unlike Nora Seed, who explores different books that represent alternate versions of her life, Alix Watson actually lives inside books we have already read.

In terms of the audiobook narration, Saskia Maarleveld does an amazing job with the different voices and accents in the book and truly brings the Librarian character to life.”
