Using rollerblades or inline skates is an outdoor activity I have always admired. I set out in my late 30’s to learn a few new skills. Firstly, I learned to swim.
As part of my New Year Resolution for 2024, I started rollerblading.
Learning to swim was not an easy task but it has become a part of my daily routine and wellness journey. Learning to rollerblade as an adult on the other hand, is a pretty big undertaking.
Before I ventured into the world of rollerblades, I tried ice skating.
I even took an adult ice skating class for learning to skate.
Prior to that I had tried skiing and snowboarding. None of those were successful experiences.
Granted, I didn’t put in any additional practice, so my results were not surprising.
I considered learning to skate with roller skates instead of rollerblades but I decided on rollerblades because let’s face it, they look good!
What gear do you need for rollerblading?
For my gear, I bought a helmet, protective gear for my wrist, elbows and knees, and a pair of rollerblades. I watched a ton of videos on rollerblading for beginners and then I suited up.
How did you decide on which rollerblades to buy?
As a beginner, I did not want to spend a lot of money on my rollerblades.
I was concerned that I would find it too difficult and give up in a couple of weeks. At the same time, I wanted to get something that was of good quality to make the learning process easy. So I did some research and decided on one that had very good reviews.
Can you learn to rollerblade or skate without lessons?
I started out practicing in my garage.
At first, I was very shaky and afraid that I would fall and possibly end up in need of a hip replacement.
I found myself walking like a duck. I practiced more and continued to watch additional videos on YouTube.
A few weeks later, when I was feeling more confident, I went to a park near for some additional practice sessions. It felt great with the wind blowing past me while I wheeled away. Wheely cool!
Can you learn to rollerblade as an adult?
Yes you can! Learning to rollerblade as an adult is possible!
It’s been ten months since I started rollerblading.
A small motivation to do this was to get moving since I work from home and wanted to ensure I stay fit after long hours of sitting at my desk.
I still consider my self a beginner but I must say I am truly enjoying this new activity!
If you are thinking of going rollerblading or skating. Below are some gear you should consider getting:
- Helmet;
- Protective gear for your wrist, elbows and knees;
- Rollerblades or Inline Skates;
- Rollerblades bag with an adjustable strap to allow you transport your skates
- Socks for skating.
- Comfortable clothing because believe it or not, you will fall at some point!
