Main Plot & Characters

Ryland Grace, a former scientist turned middle school teacher, becomes humanity’s last hope against a cosmic threat. 

  • Ryland Grace: He is the main character and narrator in the book. Grace was a former microbiologist and junior high school science teacher who unexpectedly becomes Earth’s last hope to save humanity.
  • Rocky: An alien engineer from the planet Erid, who becomes Grace’s companion aboard the Hail Mary. Rocky communicates via musical tones and has a spider-like body with five arms.
  • Eva Stratt: She is an administrator appointed by the United Nations to lead the global effort to save Earth. Eva is very pragmatic and is willing to make morally difficult decisions.
  • Irina Petrova: A Russian scientist whose name is given to the “Astrophage,” the microorganism threatening the Sun’s energy output.
  • The Hail Mary Crew: Originally, Grace was not supposed to be the sole crew member. The other two astronauts, Yáo and Ilyukhina, die in transit due to unforeseen circumstances.
  • Dr. Lokken: A specialist in xenobiology who works on Astrophage research and helps Grace early on in the project.
  • Dimitri Komorov: A Russian engineer who helps design and test various components for the Hail Mary project.
