When I lived in Massachusetts, I learned about Wachusett Mountain and decided to visit it for a weekend getaway.
Wachusett Mountain is a well-known ski area situated in Princeton, Massachusetts and is a great choice for skiers and snowboarders.
It is perfect for skiing, snowboarding and winter trekking.
Getting There
My family and I went to Wachusett Mountain for a three-day weekend.
We drove from Boston, and it took us some time to get there (about an hour and 50 minutes). It was rather easy to get there except for some traffic congestion at certain points.
Understanding the route is straightforward: simply head northwest from Boston, following major roads like I-93 and MA-2.
Renting Gear
We already had our ski goggles but we were able to rent skis, snowboards and helmets on-site. It was quite cumbersome to get the gear as there was a large number of people but it was worth the wait.
I would recommend getting your own pair if you would like to make these activities part of your lifestyle.
Skiing and Snowboarding at Wachusett Mountain
One thing you would notice upon your arrival is that Wachusett Mountain is well-maintained and has modern amenities.
It has 27 trails and eight chairlifts that go up to 1,000 feet of vertical drop.
It is perfect for those who are planning multiple visits as it offers passes that allow you skip the ticket lines and head straight to the lifts.
For those with backcountry gear, an uphill pass allows early-morning or evening ascents on designated routes.
My plan on arriving there was to ski and snowboard. On Day 1 of my visit, I took a few lessons on snowboarding since I am a beginner.
I actually enjoyed snowboarding although I lost count of the number of times I went down.
There were classes for both kids and adults, which is something I appreciated.
Tips for parents: do not schedule your classes for the same time as your children!
For some reason, I mistakenly thought the classes would be offered together and in the same area.
On Day 2, I took a lesson on skiing. Initially, I struggled with this but eventually I was able to get going however slowly!
Beyond the Slopes
I learned that you can do much more than just skiing and snowboarding at Wachusett Mountain.
Its trails and landscapes provide opportunities for other cold-weather adventures.
- Snowshoeing and Winter Hiking:
With over 17 miles of trails, you can explore Wachusett’s snow-covered forests and glades. A trek to the summit rewards you with breathtaking views, including Mount Monadnock and the Boston skyline on clear days. - Backcountry Skiing:
When snow conditions are right, you can also explore backcountry routes like the Pine Hill Trail for a steep ascent or take the gentler Summit Road for a more relaxed experience.
Recharge at the Café
After skiing and snowboarding, my family and I needed refreshment.
There were a number of places to eat including the Cafe Food Court and Black Diamon Restaurant.
The Cafe Food Court serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can order soups, salad, sandwiches and burgers.
