Summary of A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
A Court of Mist and Fury (ACOMAF) is the second installment in a popular fantasy series. It is a sequel to A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR).
The story picks up right after the events of Under the Mountain. Amarantha is dead and the curse on Tamlin’s people has been broken. Feyre Archeron returns to the Spring Court with Tamlin. They are engaged but Feyre is mentally broken. Instead of healing, she’s suffocating under guilt of what it took to break the curse and trauma from all she went through.

But everyone around her including Tamlin, choose to focus on surface level issues. She finds herself in a very ceremonial role and is nicknamed “Curse breaker.” Tamlin, who is also dealing with his own nightmares and PTSD from Amarantha’s rule becomes extremely overprotective of her. With her upcoming wedding, everyone seems to think that is where her attention should be focused on.
We learn more about Rhys and his ‘family’, and get to understand this character on a much deeper level.
When a series of events lead Feyre to flee to the Night Court with Rhys, she not only leans into her growing powers but finds love, trust, and purpose along the way.
Main Characters
- Feyre Archeron, Rhysand (Rhys), Tamlin, and Lucien: All four of them return in this book and we learn a lot more about each character.
- Morrigan (Mor): Rhysand’s cousin and third-in-command.
- Caspian: General of the Night Court’s armies.
- Azriel: Rhysand’s spymaster and a Shadowsinger. He owns a dagger known as “Truth-Teller” and is one of the most powerful members of the Night Court. Just like Rhys, Caspian and Azriel are Illyrian warriors.
- Amren: Rhysand’s second-in-command and one of the most dangerous beings in Prythian.
- Nesta and Elain: Who are Feyre’s sisters mentioned in ACOTAR, make some appearances in this book as well.
- Iante: She is a High Priestess of the Spring Court. Although she is physically very beautiful, she is extremely manipulative and hungry for power.

Writing Style
Sarah Maas connects pieces of ACOTAR to this story in a masterful way. Even though she continues to tell the story from Feyre’s point of view (except for one chapter), we learn from conversations, how bits and pieces from the first book connect with events in this book. For example, Rhys tells Feyre his version of how they met connecting to Feyre’s account of events from the first book. We also learn what startled Rhys at the end of ACOTAR.
Chapter 68 is the only chapter that is not told from Feyre’s perspective. It is written from the point of view of Rhys and was a welcome point of view.
By the end of the book you truly appreciate the characters especially the members of Rhys’ Court who we get to know and understand their backstory. Fantastic characters! There’s so much banter and humor mixed in with these characters that it is difficult not to love them.
Memorable Quotes
- “You are my salvation Feyre.”—Rhysand
- “The issue isn’t whether he loved you, it’s how much. Too much. Love can be a poison.”—Rhysand
- “He thinks he’ll be remembered as the villain in the story. But I forgot to tell him that the villain is usually the person who locks up the maiden and throws away the key. He was the one who let me out.”—Feyre
- “Then eat.”—Feyre
- “To the people who look at the stars and wish,” I said. “To the stars who listen— and the dreams that are answered,” Rhysand replied. — Feyre and Rhysand
- “I’m thinking that I was a lonely, hopeless person, and I might have fallen in love with the first thing that showed me a hint of kindness and safety. And I’m thinking maybe he knew that. Maybe not actively but maybe he wanted to be that person for someone. And maybe that worked for who I was before. Maybe it doesn’t work for who, what I am now.”—Feyre
“For between us faint and soft, hidden so no none might find it. Between us lay a whisper of color and joy. Of light and shadow. A whisper of her. Our bond.”—Rhysand referring to the mate bond
