The Premise

A Lagos Love Story is a tale about two individuals falling in love over the course of just four days. The story follows Promise Quest, a young woman doing everything she can to raise money and settle outstanding tax debts owed to the government. With the threat of losing their home looming and her father unable to return to work, saving the house becomes her sole mission—a way to preserve the memory of her late mother.

She submits a proposal to a high-end events planning company owned by Fadekemi Rhodes. But things don’t start off great. She arrives late to her interview—held, oddly enough, in the middle of an event—and gets the cold shoulder from her prospective employers. Let’s just say she was bumping into more than just bad luck that day. However, her fortunes shift when she boldly handles a PR mishap involving celebrity artist King Kator, catching the attention of the Rhodes team. They invite her in for a proper meeting.

At the so-called “interview”—which really isn’t one—Promise is told she will be put on probation for four days. Her task is simple in theory, brutal in execution: serve as concierge to King Kator, making sure he gets to all his events, shows, and interviews on time. If she succeeds, the contract is hers.

Despite the challenge, Promise refuses to back down. She pushes for an audience with the larger-than-life Kator, pleading with him to just cooperate for four days. Her father and younger sister, Favour, are skeptical about her overexerting herself for a house that seems all but lost. But Promise is determined.

Soon, she realizes that this arrogant, self-absorbed, diamond-wearing, Asake-looking superstar actually has a soul. Fadekemi starts to notice their growing closeness and warns her to stay focused. Kator’s manager notices too and offers her a job. Meanwhile, her sister is facing personal lessons of her own, and Promise just wants to survive these four days.

In the end, she doesn’t. She loses her job, has to confront the reality of losing her home, and might have lost her shot at love too.

Cast and Performances

Jemima Osunde leads the film as Promise Quest, the determined eldest daughter trying to hold her family together, and she gives a spirited performance. She brings heart, drive, and just the right amount of emotional layering to make Promise feel like someone we know or have been. From desperation to defiance, Jemima navigates each beat with convincing ease.

Mika Afolarin steps into the blinged-out shoes of King Kator and manages to sell the superstar image with swagger, flair, and the kind of self-importance that makes you want to roll your eyes, but in a good way. His gestures, his attitude, even the sunglasses, he got it.

Susan Pwajok plays Favour Quest, Promise’s younger sister, and honestly? She was a surprise hit. Many of us remember her from The Johnsons, but here, she really owns the role. There’s a quiet strength and wit in her performance that makes you wish the story gave her even more screen time.

Kalu Ikeagwu as Papa… now that’s where things get a little tricky. He’s a veteran, no doubt, but this role just didn’t sit quite right. It’s not that he acted poorly, he didn’t, but he felt slightly miscast. Still, he did his best with what he was given.

Linda Ejiofor and IK Osakioduwa play Fadekemi and Achike Rhodes, the eccentric power couple behind the high-end event company. Their dynamic was quirky, fun, and left you wanting more of their chaotic energy. IK, in particular, brought unexpected charm to the role, and frankly, he needs to be cast more often. Give this man more screen time! Pair him with Linda again and let them run wild in their own film we’d eat that up.

The cast is rounded out by Uche Montana, Victoria Adeyele (a.k.a. Veeiye), and Uti Nwachukwu, who all brought a bit of extra flair to the mix.

What I Liked About the Movie

The movie clearly put in the effort to create original songs for King Kator’s character, and that deserves some credit. They even went as far as showing a music video shoot, which was a nice touch—though I’ll admit, I was briefly confused about what was happening until I realized, “Oh, it’s a video shoot.” Still, the commitment to building that world was commendable.

I also really appreciated the performances from the main cast. They owned their roles and brought a genuine energy to the screen.

The film gave us a peek into the life of an artiste, the events, the shows, and the behind-the-scenes chaos. Even if it didn’t dive all the way in, it gave enough to feel authentic.

Weak Points

The backstory of Precious’s father’s accident, and why exactly he couldn’t go back to work, was very much missing. What I saw was a man who occasionally used an oxygen cylinder, had to avoid sweets and juice, and needed to maintain a strict diet. But I was left confused, wondering: what exactly is this man suffering from? Because it just wasn’t adding up.

Then there was the film’s attempt to add some depth or a side story to Favour Quest. As I mentioned in the premise, her arc felt like a personal life lesson about trust in the fashion industry. But where did it lead? It led to a plot twist that amounted to nothing more than just that—a life lesson. With all the screen time dedicated to her personal life and how they constantly clashed with her sister’s four-day rodeo, I expected some sort of payoff. But there wasn’t. It all just fizzled out. That’s not what I’d call a proper cliffhanger.

There were also inconsistencies in both sound and picture quality, which made parts of the movie feel a little rushed or unfinished.

And then there’s the title. The movie did not give what the title was giving. The love story wasn’t quite fairytale-like, and the “Lagos” part of it? Aside from a quick scene with some touts and glimpses of Lagos nightlife, I wasn’t exactly sure what Lagos had to do with this love.

Final Thoughts

A Lagos Love Story delivers a romantic tale that feels familiar but with just enough of a unique twist to keep it fresh. The film puts a new spin on the classic “enemies to lovers” arc, offering a different lens on the boy-meets-girl journey. That said, Reel Love definitely gives this one a run for its money. Still, it was a satisfying watch overall.

Rating

I would rate this movie 3 out of 5 stars.
