Summary of Before I Go to Sleep by S.J. Watson
Before I Go to Sleep follows Christine Lucas, a woman suffering from amnesia. Each day, Christine wakes up with no memory of her life. She is left to rely on her husband, Ben, to fill in the gaps. She is told that she had an accident 20 years ago, which is why when she wakes up, she thinks she is in her 20’s.
One day, a doctor suggests that she begin keeping a journal. Thinking it’s a great idea, Christine starts to document her days to help her remember her life and also to build a better picture. But by doing this, Christine starts to notice some inconsistencies in Ben’s accounts of her past, which ultimately makes her question everything and everyone around her.
Main Themes
The novel is about memory, identity, and trust. It looks at how fragile self-perception can truly be and the psychological impact of amnesia.
Writing Style
S.J. Watson tells the story from Christine’s perspective. By doing this, he allows readers to experience Christine’s confusion and fear firsthand.
Although Watson does introduce other characters into the book like Dr. Nash, who helps Christine with her memories, and Claire, Christine’s best friend, when you really think about it, it is Christine’s story. With that said, Christine’s story was engaging and definitely keeps you guessing and trying to figure out the twist for the most part of the book.
Impact of Before I Go to Sleep
In 2014, the novel was made into a movie. Nicole Kidman played Christine, Colin Firth played Ben and Mark Strong was Dr. Nash.
