Today, the spices I will be reviewing is the Calabash nutmeg.
When I make Nigerian Pepper Soup, this spices is one of the ingredients I include.
What is Calabash Nutmeg?
Calabash nutmeg is the seed of the Monodora myristica tree. It is native to West Africa and is found on the inside of a large fruit.
The seeds are dried and ground into a powder or used whole in cooking.
Unlike traditional nutmeg, it has a stronger flavor. It tastes smoky and peppery, which many Africans like me love in our cooking.
It is also known by other names by different groups around the world. For example people call it Ehuru (Igbo, Nigeria), Ariwo (Yoruba, Nigeria), Awerewa, Pebe, Muscadier de Calabash (French), Jamaican nutmeg and False nutmeg.
How is Calabash Nutmeg Used?
It can be used in various dishes like soups, stew, and rice dishes. It can also be used for baking and in teas.
In Nigeria, we use it when we make Pepper Soup. Some people also use it in their stews and Egusi soup. I have heard that others include it when they make Jollof rice but I have not seen this done.
How to Prepare Calabash Nutmeg
You can prepare it whole or ground.
If using whole seeds, you will need to lightly toast them. To begin, use a dry pan to release their aroma.
You can also grind this spice. To do so, grind toasted seeds using a spice grinder or mortar and pestle to create a powder.
Another alternative is to directly add this spice to soups, stews, broths, or marinades.
Nutritional and Health Benefits
Calabash nutmeg is valued for both its flavor and health benefits.
This spices helps with digestion and reduces bloating. It may also relieve inflammation in the body.
It is rich in Antioxidants and traditionally used in herbal remedies for coughs and respiratory conditions.
How Do I Store This Spices?
You should store this spices in an airtight container in a cool and dry place.
If using ground calabash nutmeg, refrigerate or freeze it to maintain its potency and prevent spoilage.
Does This Spice Expire?
Calabash nutmeg doesn’t spoil but can lose its aroma and flavor over time.
Whole seeds last longer, up to 12 months, while the ground version is best used within 6 months.
One way to know if it’s time to purchase new ones is if it has a weaker aroma and dull taste.
What Can I Use Instead of This Spice?
If this spices is unavailable, you can use traditional nutmeg, alligator pepper and black cardamom.
