Earlier this month, I went on a hike with a group. The trail route was to Guancai Mountain (棺材山), which is definitely one of the most beautiful mountain view I have ever seen. Visually, it looks like you are standing above an ocean made of clouds but with mountain peaks in your background. Guancai Mountain is located in Fangshan District, Beijing and is absolutely great for hiking.

A Little Introduction to Guancai Mountain
Guancai Mountain (棺材山), sometimes referred to as Guancaishan or “Coffin Mountain”, is a popular hiking destination located in Huangshandian Village, Fangshan District. Some people call it Coffin Mountain because at the top, there is a section that has a shape that somewhat resembles a giant coffin lying horizontally, when viewed from a distance.
You will usually see it listed whenever people make lists of iconic mountains or famous places for hikers. For many hikers, including myself, the thrill is not just about the hike itself but the views you get when you finally get to the top.

My Hiking Experience on the Trail
Yes, this trail can be tasking but truth be told, it is not overly technical. The main thing to keep in mind is that because of the elevation and long distance, you really have to be physically fit and wear proper gear.
It really is not an exaggeration to say that it looks like a painting or some of those postcard images you see in stores. The trail itself is honestly rather peaceful with only fellow hikers passing occasionally. There’s a moment near the top where the path becomes a narrow ridge with valleys on both sides. By the time you reach the top, that’s when you feel like you are in the clouds.

Trail Highlights
- Alpine Forests: You will notice a lot of grass ridges and tall trees when you first get started
- Grassy Slopes: As you climb higher, the landscape opens into grassy slopes that look almost golden because of the way the sun reflect on them.
- 360° Panoramic Views: One of the biggest rewards of this hike is the view you will get. I took a lot of pictures and made videos of what it’s like doing this hike. You will be able to see peaks like Xueshan and Nanhudashan.

How Difficult Is the Hike?
Based on my own experience of hiking Guancai Mountain, I would say I consider it a moderately challenging hike. Yes, there is elevation and so your breathing will need to be under control and you are hiking a long distance but it is not one that I would say is difficult. It took me and my group about 7 hours to complete but when I was researching what it would entail, I read that it takes some hikers a little longer, depending on their pace.

Tips for a Great Visit
- Check Weather Forecasts: Check what the weather is forecasted to be. You definitely want to go when clear weather is expected.
- Acclimate If Possible: If you’re not used to high altitudes, give yourself time to adjust.
- Pack Smart: We brought our own supplies but there is a market at the foot of the mountain. Dress in layers and remember to bring a headlamp, gloves, sunscreen, and plenty of water.
- Start Early: Even if you’re doing a multi-day hike, start early so that you can avoid afternoon clouds.
- Use Trekking Poles: You can bring along trekking poles but this is something that is optional.
- Permits: If you do not plan to spend the night on the trail, then you do not need a permit.
- Transportation: It took us about an hour and half to get there from Beijing. We left around 8am in the morning and arrived at 9.30am. We were all done by 5.30am.
Nearby Attractions
There are some other nearby attractions in the area including Zhoukoudian Peking Man Site, caves such as Shihua Cave, and scenic areas such as Mt. Shangfang National Forest Park.

Best Time to Hike Guancai Mountain
The ideal seasons are late spring to early fall (May–October), when the weather is stable and the trails are safer. I visited in November as I was invited by someone who runs a hiking club and it was a good experience for me.

Final Thoughts
Guancai Mountain is one of those hikes that is challenging enough to feel rewarding but also allows an enjoyable experience for hikers. If you’re exploring outdoors, this is one peak you absolutely shouldn’t miss.
