Out in the Darkness is a 2025 Nigerian film that follows Bolu, a new mother, who is dealing with postpartum depression. She suffers hallucinations, difficulty sleeping, and is unable to feed and care for her new baby. Diagnosed as lack of sleep or stress by doctors and silenced by stigma and assertions of spiritual attacks, Bolu finds herself isolated as her cries are unheard, her baby at risk, and her sanity unraveling. Her husband and mother fight desperately to figure out what is wrong and how they can help. Out in the Darkness shines a light on the struggles of maternal mental health in Nigeria.
