The screenplay, co-written by Johnson and Stephen Cooney, is based on Donald E. Westlake’s 2010 novel Memory. Set in the 1950s, the narrative follows New York actor Paul Cole (André Holland), who, after being beaten and left for dead in Ohio, loses his memory and becomes stranded in a mysterious small town. As he struggles to regain his identity and return home, he encounters various townsfolk, including a local costume designer named Edna (Gemma Chan).
