Summary of The Crossroads by C. J. Box

The Crossroads follows Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett after he is found in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head. Joe is discovered in his truck at Antler Creek Junction, a crossroads that connects three ranches. The catch is that each road leads to a family with possible reasons to want him dead. With Joe unconscious and unable to explain what happened, the mystery falls to those closest to him.

Joe’s wife, Marybeth, stays by his side while he is in a coma. At the same time, his daughters, Sheridan, April, and Lucy begin investigating the three families tied to the crossroads, since Joe was on his way to visit one of them, though no one knows which one. What follows is a tense search for answers. The Pickett family work against time to find out who shot Joe and why. While this is a story about family loyalty, it also gives readers danger and suspense against the backdrop of the modern American West.

Writing Style

We weren’t supposed to read this book next in our queue but when we wanted to add it to our reading list at our local library, it said there were about 75 people waiting and we were like what’s so special about this one and so we decided to read it and we are glad we did.

C. J. Box tells the story using a narration style. The story itself is fast-paced and the author uses time jumps and flashbacks to give us an idea of what Joe Pickett was up to before he got shot. You immediately feel the danger because the case is not only about solving a crime but also about saving Joe and protecting his family.

We liked the fact that we didn’t have to wait to find out who shot joe. By chapter three, Box gives us this information but then the quest to figure out the motivation behind the shooting truly begins and that is where this story thrives.

One thing we like about C.J. Box’s writing is that even though this book is number 24 in the series, a new reader can jump in with this book, without reading anything else and still enjoy it. That is not an easy thing to pull off but Box achieves this with ease.

We didn’t initially like the cover of the book because our initial thoughts was that it felt too literal. But after reading the book, our opinion changed. Now, we think the cover fits the story perfectly.

Final Thoughts on The Crossroads by C. J. Box

Overall, The Crossroads gives readers a story that is intense from start to the finish. The decision to reveal the shooter is a great idea because it shifts the focus to the “why” rather than the “who,” and that choice pays off. By the end, this is a story that reminds you why the Joe Pickett series continues to resonate with readers but it also gives new readers a chance to jump in and enjoy the story. If you enjoy fast-paced mysteries with a family at the center, this one is definitely worth picking up.
