Yanghanyanghan is a spice native to West Africa, particularly Nigeria.
Visually, it looks shiny, I would say dark purple-brown, and is used in traditional cooking and medicine. Like many spices, I learned this in my early days of cooking, it goes by other names. Some people call it prekese or aidan fruit. For many years, I also called it prekese until a friend of my said Yanghanyanghan. I asked what that was and she showed me and I was like you mean prekese. She laughed and said same thing.

What is Yanghanyanghan?
Yanghanyanghan is the fruit of the Tetrapleura tetraptera tree, a large tropical tree that thrives in humid environments. The pods, which are slightly curved are harvested and used in various ways for their flavor and health-promoting properties.

How is Yanghanyanghan Used?
To be honest when I think of Yanghanyanghan the first thing that comes to mind especially when I make Nigerian food is pepper soup. That’s what I know most people add it to. I have however also seen others add it to stews.
You can use the pods to season meat and poultry.
Depending on the chef, the pods can be added either whole or broken into smaller pieces. I prefer to break them into smaller pieces when I cook.
Some people use the pods for making teas or traditional beverages. Others use the pods with herbs and boil them for therapeutic purposes.

How Do You Prepare Yanghanyanghan?
When I am cooking with this spice, I usually start by washing the pods thoroughly to remove sand or any kind of dirt. Then I break them into smaller pieces and add them directly to the pot while cooking. They are very fast to act so don’t get carried away with adding too much or thinking it would take a long time for the taste to get in there. Before my food is cooked, I remove the pods as I do not eat them but simply use them for flavor.
If you decide to use them for teas, then it’s same thing to watch how long you leave them in. I usually crush the pods to release their aroma, then boil them in water for 10–15 minutes. After that use a sieve or strainer to remove the pods and then you can enjoy your tea..
The pods can also be dried and ground into a fine powder to use as a seasoning or skincare product.

How Do I Store Yanghanyanghan?
You must store this spice in a cool and dry place. If moisture gets on it, mold quickly forms.
It is best to place the pods in airtight jars or resealable bags to maintain their aroma and flavor. You should also avoid placing them in direct sunlight to preserve their nutrients and color.
If you do this right, the pods can last for several months without losing potency.

What Can I Use Instead of Yanghanyanghan?
If this spices is unavailable, I usually turn to other substitutes like star anise or a combination of smoked paprika , cloves and nutmeg to mimic its qualities. It’s not a perfect replacement but these do add flavor to dishes.
Cardamom pods also work well if what you are seeking is something sweet and spicy flavor.
