What is Zobo?
Zobo is a drink. It is a dark red or purple colored-juice and originates from Nigeria.
The word Zobo or Zoborodo in Hausa Language means edible Hibiscus sabdariffa. People in the Northern parts of Nigeria speak the Hausa language.
This drink is extremely popular in almost every region of Nigeria.
How Is It Pronounced?
It is pronounced “Zoh-boh” or “Zoe-Bow”.
How Does Zobo Taste and What Does It Look Like?
It has a tangy-sweet taste. I would describe it as tropical fruity, cranberry-like or earthy!
Visually, it looks like cranberry juice or dark red wine.
What Goes Into Zobo Drinks?
When I make this drink, I use dried hibiscus leaves, fresh pineapple, watermelon, ginger, and cloves. I like to add a splash of orange or lemon juice for a citrusy kick. Then I decide on whether I would sweeten it with sugar or honey. Once it’s ready, I chill it and serve it over ice for a cool, refreshing drink.
What Are the Health Benefits of Zobo Drink?
In one study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the findings showed that there is strong evidence that consuming Hibiscus sabdariffa in forms like tea, capsules, or drinks has many health benefits.
According to the study, it can help lower blood pressure, sugar levels, cholesterol, and inflammation. It may also boost antioxidants, fight anemia, improve hydration, and help with weight control.
What Are Some Other Names for Zobo?
Zobo is called by various names around the world, showcasing its popularity across regions.
In English, it is commonly known as Roselle. In North Africa, especially in Egypt and Sudan, people refer to it as Karkade or Carcade.
Ghanaians and Senegalese enjoy it as Sobolo or Bissap, while in parts of Latin America and the Caribbean, it goes by the name Agua de Jamaica.
No matter the name, people across different cultures clearly cherish this beloved drink.

Do You Serve Zobo as a Hot or Cold Drink?
It is served as a cold drink. You can even include ice cubes or crushed ice. Another option is to freeze it as popsicles or ice cubes.
You can also use the hibiscus leaves to make hot tea. Hibiscus tea is very tasty and one of my favorite teas during the fall and winter seasons.
Zobo Recipe (Nigerian Drink)
Equipment
- Large pot
- Wooden spoon
- Fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth
- Knife and cutting board
- Blender optional, for blending pineapple or ginger
- Large bowl
- Bottles or pitchers for storing the drink
Ingredients
- 2 cups dried zobo leaves (hibiscus petals)
- 1 medium pineapple (peeled and diced)
- 2 cups fresh watermelon (cubed, seeds removed)
- 1-2 tbsp cloves
- 1 large piece of fresh ginger (peeled and grated)
- 4 cups water
- 1-2 cups sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1 orange or lemon Optional (for a citrusy kick)
- Fruit juice or flavorings like pineapple, orange, or blackcurrant juice Optional
Instructions
Prepare Ingredients:
- Rinse the dried Zobo leaves under cold water to remove dirt or dust.
- Dice the pineapple and cube the watermelon, removing seeds if needed. Grate the ginger.
Boil the Base:
- In a large pot, combine the Zobo leaves, pineapple, ginger, and cloves with 4 cups of water.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 20-30 minutes. Stir occasionally.
Blend the Watermelon:
- While the zobo base simmers, blend the cubed watermelon until smooth. Strain the watermelon juice through a sieve to remove any pulp.
Combine and Cool:
- After the zobo base has cooled to room temperature, strain it through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean bowl to remove solids.
- Mix the strained zobo with the watermelon juice.
Sweeten and Flavor:
- Add sugar to the combined drink and stir until dissolved. Adjust sweetness to taste.
- Add orange or lemon juice for extra flavor, if desired.
Chill and Serve:
- Pour the zobo into bottles or pitchers and refrigerate until cold.
- Serve chilled over ice, and garnish with fresh watermelon slices or mint leaves for a refreshing touch.

Tips for the Perfect Zobo
- For a healthier version, replace sugar with honey or other natural sweeteners.
- Blending the watermelon and pineapple together before adding to the drink.
- Experiment with additional fruits like strawberries or apples for unique flavors. Also try spices like cinnamon for unique twists.
